Some of the decoratives that would be the perfect choice of a Mothers Day gift are show pieces, vases, figurines and lanterns made of different kinds of materials. You can even gift her gardening tools that are easier on her hands and or saplings of small plants in adorable pots. make her a collage, gift her a new camcorder or camera…

Question by Cydney -: For my 4-H project I have to do a demonstration (My project is gardening), ideas for this demonstration?
I mean, the best I can come up with is “This is how you plant a seed”, or “This is a shovel, it is used for….”
Preferably nothing that involves carrying around dirt etc.
Any ideas?

Hi:
Think about a garden as an a little adventure in landscape design. Take a three different small pots of flowers. (you can buy them inexpensive) Arrange the pots in a triangle and explain this is part of designing a small flower bed. You could also do this with pint or one gallon shrubs. Take a look at my website and see if it will help at all. I am a landscaper and designer and if you need more suggestions, contact me. Think about how you would plan for this garden, how to prepare for your plants and different aspects of planting, watering and maintaining them. Make it simple for yourself. Good luck you and I hope you win the 4-H project! Kimberly
Glance through different sections and you may come up with some other ideas. Let me know how you made out!

An Idea for a Unique Deck, Outdoor Rugs

May 3, 2012 by

Do you have a deck that’s looking kind of dull or patio furniture that’s not so fabulous anymore? There’s a quick and relatively inexpensive way to spice up your alfresco living space:

An outdoor rug.

You won’t have difficulty finding one because they’re everywhere, in an explosion of textures, colors and prints.

“Outdoor rugs have really blown up over the past four years,” says Steve Glassman, vice president in charge of rugs at Marshall Carpet One & Rug Gallery in Mayfield Heights. “Almost every major carpet company has an outdoor line. It’s just been a very popular trend.”

Says Kazim Amini, manager of rugs at Sedlak Interiors in Solon, “Many people have been coming in for them for the past few years. They’ve really become popular.”

Why? Several reasons.

“First of all, there’s a huge trend toward enjoying the outdoors, with outdoor kitchens and that kind of thing,” says Janna Lutz, owner of Chestnut Hill Home in Chagrin Falls. “Let’s face it. In Cleveland, Ohio, we want to extend our enjoyment of the summer months for as long as possible.”

Outdoor rugs tie into the idea that our back yards are no longer just yards; they’re outdoor “rooms” where families dine or just kick back and hang out. They often have fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, bars and even outdoor kitchens.

“They’re really just another part of an outdoor lifestyle that we’re seeing now,” says Dawn Cook of Dawn Cook Interior Design in Shaker Heights.

Says Dennis Reddy, manager of carpets at Sedlak Interiors, “We’re selling a lot more outdoor furniture, and the rugs give the setting more ambience.”

Another reason for the surge is that the quality of indoor/outdoor rugs has greatly improved, rendering them much more resistant to the elements, stains, wear and tear, and mold and mildew.

“They used to be very plastic-y and the designs weren’t that pleasing,” Lutz adds. “But that’s not true anymore.”

Says Cook, “There has been a revolution in technology. Most are made out of polypropylene, which is strong. I think the whole industry has taken off because the rugs have become so durable.”

Sandy Varleman of Weave Ideas in Mayfield says the most common fibers for outdoor rugs are:

    • Polypropylene, which is a low-cost, color-fast synthetic fiber with dense construction that sheds water quickly.

    • Duracord, a soft man-made fiber that’s similar to cotton. It’s also durable and dries quickly but has thicker nap than polypropylene.

    • Polyester, which isn’t as durable as polypropylene, may fade and weaken with exposure to the elements.

  • Recycled polypropylene, which is durable and fast-drying.

Contemporary outdoor rugs are easy to clean, designers say. For most, just hose them down and you’re done.

They’re also gorgeous. You’ll find bold, colorful prints including fruits, florals, stripes, geometrics and abstracts; Persian looks that you’d normally find on a living room or den rug; soothing shades of blues and greens; and much more. In such a wide variety of colors and prints, you’ll likely find one that fits your taste, and the designs mimic indoor-quality rugs.

Adding an outdoor rug is an affordable way to revitalize your outdoor retreat, especially compared with buying new furniture or other major overhauls.

“There are 5-by-8 outdoor rugs that are less than $200 in some collections,” says Glassman.

However, if you check out the home decor departments at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls or even Walmart, you might find them even cheaper.

“The price points are very approachable,” says Varleman. “Chances are, you can find something that suits your style and budget.”

You can go upscale, too, with labels such as Stanton Royal Dutch and Capel. At Sedlak, custom-cut outdoor rugs are available, says Reddy.

Outdoor rugs can conveniently cover wear and imperfections on your patio, deck, porch or gazebo.

They’re versatile, too. Contemporary outdoor rugs are attractive enough to take inside after summer to decorate and protect the floor of a foyer, kitchen, recreation room or any other high-traffic area.

Choosing an outdoor rug depends first and foremost on your taste and budget. But there are design considerations:

• If the furniture that you’re pairing a rug with has a busy pattern, go with something neutral. On the other hand, if the furniture is understated, bring the space to life with a more exciting rug pattern.

• Keep in mind that lighter colors make an area appear larger, while dark colors make a space feel cozier, Varleman says.

• If you’re positioning the rug under a table and chairs and you want it to extend beyond the set, take measurements before you go shopping.

Outdoor rugs are a fun way to update your outdoor space without causing too much pain to your pockets.

What are some good landscaping and gardening ideas for a LOW budget?

Question by Zero_Lyfe: What are some good landscaping and gardening ideas for a LOW budget?
I don’t have a lot of money(not broke!) but I would really like to do some work on our yard. What plants can I buy or yardwork can I do that works for a low budget. If at all possible, can u add pictures please? any help is greatly appreciated.

What you can do if you don’t want to spent too much money on plants is by propagating existing plants from your backyard (if you have any) or from friends/family.

Alternatively, you can grow new plants from seeds.

You have to know what kind of plants are suitable for your garden.

If you are planning to plant these plants to the ground, you don’t need to spend any money for containers.
But if you do want to have some container plants, there are a lot of things that you already have in your house that you might not want to use anymore that can be used as a pot. For example, old buckets, old rubbish bin, unused plastc cups, plastic bottles, etc. Just make sure there are good drainage by poking holes at the bottom.

Does anyone have any great ideas on gardening a gravesite. Flowers, small bushes and such?

Question by chinarain53: Does anyone have any great ideas on gardening a gravesite. Flowers, small bushes and such?
I have been tending a family plot for several years. Then my grandmother passed last August, and all my gardening was upheaved. But now the plot is full, nobody else will be buried there any more, and I would need to start from scratch. Any ideas on planting flowers that will come back next year and maybe a small type bush?

You left out what growing zone you are in. One very awesome ground cover is roman chamomile … it’s perennial, not to be confused with German chamomile which is an annual. It’s beautiful … covered with little daises in the summer, and stand up to walking on. When touched it gives off the smell of apples.
A small tough, but very fragrant shrub I like is a type of fragrant rose that needs no care an stand up to harsh conditions … rosa rugosa.

First you start with an intro like plants and flower days how to water them and give them a assignment to grow any flower or veggie in a small pot by themselves.

Garden benches can be any style; and Doug Green points out a great many other landscaping ideas at www.landscaping-ideas-for-gardening.com Great gardens range from the very formal to the crazily informal – from the serious to full of gardening whimsy and the benches and seats in a landscape reflects the design. The main point however is that if you don’t have a place to sit in your garden, the only time you’ll go there is to work. Sit and enjoy the fruits of your gardening labors! Entertain in your own style surrounded by the flowers you love to grow. It doesn’t matter whether your landscape design calls for a garden bench or chairs, nor does it matter which style you prefer. What does matter is that you have them – get a place to sit in your garden. Benches can also fill the role of focal points in the garden – places to draw the eye to highlight the bench. They can also be disguised or take a secondary role to gorgeous flowers. Doug writes a gardening blog at www.douggreensgarden.com

Question by Nancy C: I would like some gardening ideas for the winter to help with those long cold days. ?
Having lived in Florida, the winter in North Carolina can be long and boring. I would just appreciate some new ideas for continuing my gardening during the winter months. I have a greenhouse.

Living in Ohio, the long and cold winters can be a drag. First, make sure all of your gardening tools are clean, sharped, and ready to go for next year. Second, in spring you can start seeds for a vegetable garden. Other than that, just keep an eye on your plants in the cold temperatures (and for me in the snow when it gets deep) and plan for next year. If you don’t have a compost bin, you can always start one of them too.
