I am both interested in studying horticulture and garden design. What would be a smarter thing to do: to get a degree in horticulture and then pursue some sort of specialisation in garden design or vice versa? To what an extent do these two things intertwine in real life?

Well I would think the more you know about plants their habits and growth the better designer you would be.I would much rather a doctor studied the human body first before operating on me ( a lil joke) anyway horticulture 1st then design.

I’ve always enjoyed working outside with the earth and plants. I thought about becoming a Landscaper for awhile but now I’m into computers. Just tonight I saw at this College’s website that I am thinking about going to, they have a major for Garden Design. Does that help with becoming a landscaper for a business like that?

Do you think you’d enjoy design? If you are good at it, it can be very lucrative. It’s not easy, there is ALOT of math, geometry and the like.

I am a landscaper and designer. Garden designs come from your own personality and sharing your favorite colors and textures outside in a garden. The method of planning – prepping and planting is a great way to do any style garden. I will link you to the examples of landscape designs of my website. These are hand drawn designs. I am not an artist by any means, but my clients like simple designs and design keys they can follow. Look through and see if any one of these may help. I am starting a company to help people design and refresh their gardens and landscapes.  My services will include planning out their garden, helping them select plants at the nursery, and then helping them keep their yard green and healthy.  I’m thinking of a name with
“– Scenes” or “– Scapes” in it, but I’m open to any ideas.  I am near the coast and specialize in plants that do well there. I love the name Gardenscapes but it is already taken.  Thanks much!

I’m especially interested in cheap or free garden design software, or a good online garden design site.
I actually prefer to design on paper, but I get a lot of questions from people asking about design software, which I know nothing about. Yet another good reason to be part of Yahoo Answers!

I have found some good ones and they all want money. lol. I have read your answers before and you are extremely knowledgeable. I am pretty sure your instincts and knowledge far surpass any program available. besides. You know that once you are at the install phase it all changes anyways. I have a couple of programs in my computer and I never use them.
I also hate the fact that many installs I do from designers don’t work, don’t follow the basic principles of design, aren’t practical, look bad, or the scale is so far off, I have to do it over again for them.
I can’t believe the money I have seen people spend on poorly done plans. wow.
You know the saying, ” It looks good on paper”
Although I have taken landscape design, I opt to work off bubble diagrams with my customers. I tell them this is easier, free, and allows them to free up more money to spend in their yard. they love this fact. ( except for higher end clients )

Hi there,
My name is Laurie and I am looking for some ideas (hoping to find the perfect one) on what to name my new company. I am in the process of becoming licensed, bonded and insured but in order to get the ball rolling, I need to finalize my decision on a company name asap. I originally came up with Personalized Gardening but I want my company to be multipurpose (i.e.- both business ran under the same name, for both floral design & garden design). Also I do not want my name included in the logo. If you have any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate them. Thanks so so so much
